Dungeons and Dragons: The Phoenix #1 (Part 1)
If I recall correctly, we were sat in a deforested area with these giant creatures around us. One of the creatures pointed at our drow mage and spoke. We only understood one word: phoenix.
The group gathered around us resembled ogres, one was a male with two heads, another (most likely the leader) a female who seemed to be concerned with her own mutterings. The ogre-like beasts moved in on our drow, at which point she fired a spell at one of them, encased the female in a globe of darkness and turned invisible to escape to hide behind a nearby tree. Captain Dove, who had travelled with us, was fiddling in his pockets. I’ll just say that the methods of the captain are not the same as my own and leave it at that.
It was at this point that two more people appeared. One seemed very familiar to me: the dwarf! He had finally caught up with us after 4 months, although for him it looked like it took a lot longer for him to make it to us. It would also appear that he had a new travelling companion, a battle maiden of Tempus, or so I would believe. A strange pursuit for an elf if you think about it.
We conversed with the dwarf, only to be reminded of the situation at hand (the ugly brutes about to try and kidnap the mage). It was at this point I asked Dove if he had a device that would allow us to talk to them and the dwarf decided to chip in with a “Hey ugly” at the ogre-like being with two heads. This, it must be said, did not go down well with them and yes: they could understand us.
They claimed that we had a dark unicorn that was the embodiment of the Phoenix, and they had a glowing gem that would prove this fact. We were not so sure. They also resorted to calling the dwarf a bloodstone. Something else was amiss…I could no-longer feel the presence of my god. Thankfully I am a paladin of much faith, and this seemed to keep me going through the affair and allow me to continue my goodly works.
It was clear that we weren’t gettting anywhere, so our mage hurled a fireball at their leader, only to have the fireball encompass the whole area, turning all it consumed into naught but ash. She began to glow. A fiery aura surrounded her and we tried in vain to bring her to her senses. Eventually the drow managed to get a grip on her newly found power and channeled it relentless force into the very ground itself, turning the rocks to obsidian.
The ogres had mentioned that they were allied to the Witch King, the leader of a forsaken, names of which we’d not heard before. The Witch king was seeking the Phoenix to use as a weapon in the war between the ogres and the bloodstone. The name bloodstone rang a bell, and we realised that we must’ve travelled back in time. Back to a time before history began. The time when all races of the world fought for supremacy. We were also aware of how that war ended: the elves used the phoenix as the utlimate weapon almost destroying the world in the process. We were now making history.
We derived from this that we must try and find allies and keep the Phoenix away from the Witch King. To that end we headed into a nearby wooded area, aware that from the moment we entered the forest that we were being followed. This stalking party revealed themselves to us as Shi, the elves of this ancient world. We conversed about the state of the world and the current alliances. The Witch King, who commanded the undead (the forsaken) had allied himself with the Ogryn. The Shi had allied with the Milaysians (humans) and the bloodstone (dwarves). Some races had yet to join the battle, such as the Dark Unicorns (drow). The Shi we had been talking to mentioned that we should speak to his captain, and offered the hospitality of his camp until this person arrived.
We did not have to wait long as within moment the captain was with us. He looked familiar. Very familiar. After speaking to him for a few moment I asked him his name: Aurion.
